best investment I've made for this house
Hooked this up in my off-grid cabin with 3 panels. It runs all day for free and I don't even need a battery bank. Super quiet and keeps the place ice cold.

is it hard to install?
A1 SolarStore
The solar panels just plug into the back with standard connectors. It’s way simpler than a full solar home system.

About product

The HotSpot Energy ACDC18C 18k BTU Solar Hybrid Heat Pump Mini Split is a battery-free solar air conditioner that connects directly to standard solar panels — no inverter, charge controller, or batteries required. Designed for residential and light commercial use, this solar mini split operates on DC power from 4–8 panels, AC grid power, or both simultaneously, giving it the flexibility to run cost-free during peak sun hours while staying fully operational at night or on overcast days.

Key specifications

  • Cooling / Heating capacity — 17,000 BTU rated cooling (18,015 BTU max); 18,083 BTU heating
  • SEER / SEER with solar — >22 standard (AHRI 210/240 rated); equivalent >75 calculated on paid-for energy with solar input
  • Solar DC input — 110–300 Vmp, ≤15A; requires 4 panels (290–375W, 72-cell) in series, up to 8 for full off-grid operation
  • Indoor noise level — 41/38/33 dB(A) at Hi/Med/Lo fan speeds
  • Certifications & warranty — ETL/UL listed, Energy Star, AHRI certified; 1-year parts / 3-year compressor warranty

Daytime cooling at near-zero energy cost

Most air conditioners draw heaviest from the grid precisely when solar panels produce the most power — the ACDC18C is built to exploit that overlap. Its compressor accepts DC voltage directly from the panels, displacing up to 100% of paid-for electricity during daylight hours, with no net metering agreement or special utility meter required. When solar input falls short, the unit seamlessly blends in AC power, so there is never a gap in comfort regardless of cloud cover or time of day.

Key applications

  • Residential home or office — Keeps spaces up to 1,000 sq. ft. (92 m²) cool all day for a fraction of normal AC operating costs; preventing daytime heat buildup also reduces evening cooling demand.
  • Off-grid cabin or outbuilding — With 5–8 panels wired in series, the unit can run entirely on solar power with no AC connection; an optional grid tie-in is available for 24-hour coverage.
  • Year-round heating — Heat pump operation is rated down to 6°F outdoor ambient, making this a viable primary heating source in mild-to-moderate climates without additional fuel costs during sunny days.
  • International installations — Dual-frequency AC input (50/60 Hz) and compatibility with all standard 72-cell panel types make this unit usable worldwide.
  • Supplemental system in larger homes — Cools a single high-use zone to reduce whole-home HVAC runtime, lowering overall electricity bills without a full system replacement.

No batteries, no inverter needed

Unlike conventional off-grid HVAC approaches, the ACDC18C accepts raw DC voltage directly from the panel string, bypassing the losses and costs associated with inverters, charge controllers, and battery banks. The variable BLDC compressor (Toshiba/GMCC dual-rotary) modulates output based on available solar input, drawing down to AC power only when solar production is insufficient. No power is exported to the grid, and no net metering agreement is required.

Advanced features

  • Real-time DC utilization display — The indoor unit's LED display shows live solar power consumption, allowing users to confirm how much of the current load is being offset by panels.
  • Seamless AC/DC blending — The controller prioritizes all available DC (solar) power first, drawing AC only for the remaining load — no switching delay or compressor interruption during transitions.
  • Wide outdoor operating range — Rated for cooling in ambient temperatures up to 125°F and heating down to 6°F, suited for extreme climates in both directions.
  • High-efficiency refrigeration circuit — R410A charge (1,600 g / 56.5 oz), COP of 3.88 at rated cooling and 3.89 at rated heating, with a max lineset run of 50 ft. and max elevation of 16 ft.

System compatibility

The ACDC18C connects to any standard 72-cell solar panels rated 290–375W per panel. Panels must be wired in series to achieve the required 110–300 Vmp DC input range; a minimum of 4 panels (≥1,200W total) is required for operation, and up to 8 panels can be connected for full off-grid use or low-light resilience. Standard MC4 connectors are used throughout the solar DC wiring — no proprietary connectors required. For AC backup, the unit requires a dedicated 208–240V, 50/60Hz circuit sized for a 7.13A rated load (1.2A locked-rotor amp). The indoor and outdoor units ship as a matched pair; max lineset distance is 50 ft. with a maximum vertical elevation difference of 16 ft. No separate solar inverter, MPPT charge controller, or battery system is needed or compatible with the DC input circuit.

Why choose the HotSpot Energy ACDC18C?

HotSpot Energy has manufactured solar air conditioners since 2007, making the ACDC18C the product of over a decade of purpose-built solar HVAC development — not a standard mini split retrofitted with an add-on solar kit. The ACDC18C's ability to run on solar only, grid only, or a blend of both — without batteries or an inverter — removes the two largest cost and complexity barriers in off-grid cooling. For buyers who want meaningful daily energy savings from solar without committing to a full battery storage system, no comparable off-the-shelf solution offers the same combination of SEER performance, installation simplicity, and flexible power input.
