Roof top solar systems
Roof is a natural place for homeowners to put their solar panels at: it is well-illuminated and it is usually not used for anything else. As long as your energy needs aren’t too high, a roof mounted solar system is a great solution for your house. Advantages of a roof-mounted solar system
- House roof is rarely used for anything and putting solar panels up there is an efficient usage of your available space.

- A roof-top solar system requires less maintenance: panels get dirty slower and rain washes away most of the debris.
- Shading is less of a problem with systems on a roof.
Disadvantages of a roof top solar system
- More expensive and difficult to install than a ground-based installation.
- It’s harder to get perfect positioning with solar panels on the roof than with PV modules on the ground. Thus if your roof doesn’t have a good configuration for solar panels, the production of your rooftop solar system might be lower than that of a ground-based system of the same capacity.
- Harder to access, maintain and service since all of your PV modules are on the roof.
- There is only so much space on your roof: it is usually not possible to build a high power capacity system on top of your house.
Roof mounted solar system cost
The cost of your system is going to depend primarily on its size: not only the more watts your kit has, the more expensive it is, it also gets more pricey to install. Picking quality racks, frames, screws and fasteners also becomes very important for roof mounted kit.
Panels and inverters impact the cost of your system as well. When it comes to panels, Chinese are the cheapest. American PV modules are slightly more expensive and of a higher quality. Also there are brands with premium-class panels for roof mounted solar systems for home, such as REC, Panasonic, LG, Solaria. When it comes to inverters, string ones are the most common pick. Microinverters are slightly more expensive, but they last longer, they deal with shading better and they are more efficient.
Don’t forget to apply for different solar programs and incentives — in the end they might reduce your final roof mounted solar system price by a fair amount. Consult with your contractor about programs that your system might be eligible for. Always apply for Federal Solar Tax Credit: you deduct 26% of the costs of your system from your taxes.
