48V Charge Controllers

Every solar panel system with a battery should have a charge controller. But before purchasing it, you have to make sure that it goes well with your battery. While for residential systems 24V batteries are very popular, 48V batteries are on the rise. If you choose a 48V battery, it is important to get a 48V charge controller to ensure the safety of your energy storage.

Why do you need a charge controller?

The primary function of a charge controller is protection of a battery from high voltage of panels. If you connect panels to a battery without a controller, high voltage leads to overheating of a battery and its fast demise. Besides, a solar 48v charge controller.

  • controls the electric charge coming to a battery: prevents its overcharging and its usage when it’s deeply discharged.
  • helps you to monitor the system alongside a solar inverter: shows the load of the battery and measures the voltage of panels.
  • block reverse currents: at night electricity can flow from battery back to panels. Potentially, it can start a fire.

How to choose a charge controller?

When you are looking at a charge controller, it must be well-suited for your battery. A 48V solar charge controller goes well with 48V battery. However, a solar 48V charge controller often works fine with the batteries of a lower voltage. Besides, there are two main characteristics that you look for in a solar charge controller of 48V: maximum amps and maximum voltage.

Take the combined solar power of your array (wattage of all connected panels) and divide it by the voltage of your battery. The amp size of the controller must be bigger than the number that you’ve got.

  • In the specifications of your panels you can find their open circuit voltage (VOC). Take the VOCs of every solar panel in the array and sum them together. In cold weather the voltage rises even higher, so add another 5 volts for every panel in the array on top of its VOC. Maximum voltage of your controller must be bigger than this sum.
  • 48V charge controllers are both well-suited for lead-acid batteries, as well as for lithium-ion batteries. The only difference is that lead-acid battery capacity is measured in amp-hours (mAh), whereas the capacity of a lithium battery is measured in watt-hour (Wh). Since Power = Voltage × Amperage, it’s easy to translate amp-hour into watt-hour – just multiply amp-hour capacity by the voltage of the battery.
