Inverter arrived right when expected and is working well. Replaced a pair of 36048s being used in master/slave configuration.
ok so im not super technical but our rv kept having issues with the old batteries dying too fast especially in winter camping. my son researched for weeks and said get the northstar and just trust him lol. so i did. and wow what a difference. we went on a 10 day trip last month with two days of cloudy weather and the power situation was just a non issue the whole time. before we woulda been stressing by day 3. very very happy and yes my son was right as usual haha
Bought this one in case I want to add some batteries to my installation later. So far, so good
that's a 5-star service and a 5-star product!
You're killing it guys, thanks
Very easy customer service experience. Thank you.
So far i'm quite satisfied. would i recommend a1? 4sure
Grabbed that along with panels at their fulfillment center at Orlando. Very nice people, know their job. told me all about driving all this solar stuff home safely.
Quite a convenient model, easy to program. The efficiency could be better, but for this money it’s a very good deal.
ok, i basically purchased this instead of getting an inverter and controller for my panels. quite convenient indeed and very easy to setup – i just basically hung it on the wall in the garage, connected it to my PV system and main panel and ran its standard program and voila. approved.
I was very pleased with the speed of delivery, thx! Yesterday we’ve finally finished the installation, everything is in place. The inverter works, it is very silent, let’s hope it stays that way.
Awesome charge controller! Yes, not the cheapest, but if you want to get an MPPT charge controller, I suggest you give this brand and A1 a try. I like that it can store 128 days of data, allowing you to see trends over time.
Works great with my li-ion batteries. Don’t expect any miracles from this unit, but it is a durable workhorse that can be installed outside without worries. I also liked the service and a pickup option, it saved me a lot of time.
very convenient. thank you very much
Excellent quality! Very well made. Had a bit of a problem with setting it up though. The manual is 126 pages long! Could not get customer service after waiting for 13 minutes. Would buy it again, but this time hire another electrician other than myself to help with the installation.
I did my research before the purchase and you should do the same. Under my circumstances it was the best option, but keep in mind that it requires MATE3, MATE and MATE2 are not supported.
I took an FM60 to Haiti recently. Very hot and high humidity. We coupled it with eight 180watt 26v modules. The controller was very easy to set up, and the charging began immediately. We had a 24v battery bank (8 x 6v). We put some heavy loads on it like pressure pumps, a big miter saw and a fridge. The unit never missed a beat.
Just awesome. The same goes for the service and delivery. The display shows all the relevant system data. Highly recommend
Just want you to know that the package arrived, everything is good. We’ll start the installation this week. Your calculator really helped with sizing, great tool.
Thanks for the service! The package came in like 4 days or something, very happy. I followed your guidelines and installed the inverter in the garage. Hope that this one will last longer than my last one. Stay safe!
I owned a cheap 30A controller before. It clearly wasn’t up to the challenge of marine life. Installing this one was very easy, and now I enjoy fully charged batteries even on cloudy days.
The inverter is obviously too small for a home installation, but it fits my RV system just fine. The installation was a bit messy, cause my van is so old. your articles on the setup actually helped quite a bit
Overall, it’s a good model for a camper van or a boat for its money. The efficiency isn’t the best, but it works well when it’s hot, the warranty is all right and it’s somewhat programmable. I picked two of these and they've been serving me for 6 months now.
Bought this model four month ago. Before the purchase I discussed with my electric supplier the possibility of grid connection and net metering. The procedure was very simple and my installer also helped a lot with little details. Now I sell into the grid basically half of what I generate. Very happy with myself and my purchase, so thank you
just got my package. everything’s good. Thanks for the help, the delivery was very fast indeed! Nick and I will finish the installation tomorrow, i think. take care
The inverter itself I found to be too small for a home system. I put it in my van, works fine. the efficiency could be higher though. As for service, everything was good, the package arrived fast, tnx.
Just received the package, everything seems to be in place. Thanks for the fast delivery!
I installed this one on my yacht a long time ago, but it started clipping, because I added some stuff on the board. Anyway, I decided to buy another one to stack them. The retailer from which I purchased the first inverter went out of business, but luckily i found the same inverter here. The prices are good and the shipping was fast. Thanks a bunch..
I picked this one for our Texas ranch where we live solely on solar energy. grabbed it at the warehouse in Arlington. It is a well-made product, quite heavy, but high-quality nevertheless. I backed it up with batteries and they made living off-grid a much more comfortable experience.
A very good inverter from a reliable company. My friend has the same model so I decided to pick it. The delivery was fast, nothing was broken so you have my thanks and utmost respect. :)
Purchased this one for my boat a year ago. Came back to find optimizers and decided to drop you a line and say thanks. Generally sea air doesn’t sit well with inverters, but so far this model is doing well.
We are not connected to the grid and all our energy comes from the sun. That’s why we need a backup for everything just in case. OutBack makes reliable equipment, hence our choice.
Thanks! It’s been a year since me and my family went off-grid: the power lines here aren’t really good and we often sat in the dark for hours. Since we’ve installed solar, these problems have gone away. We also grabbed some batteries from you to have a supply for the night, they are nice.
We used this inverter for our gas station in Ohio. The system is quite big so we had to get two of them. The results do not disappoint: we basically nullified our daily needs in commercial electricity. and at night the energy is cheaper anyway. Thanks a lot for the fast delivery!
Great charge controller, but I wonder why they couldn’t add a small display that you can see in so many other models. If this is an important feature for you, you will have to look through other options, but overall it is an excellent device
We bought two of these a year ago for our home system. My husband actually used your calculator to size the installation. The inverters still work fine even though it can be quite dusty here in Arizona. just wanted to thank you once again for your amazing service!
I purchased this inverter and so far I’m impressed with how well it withstands the weather here in Arizona. Each of my two previous inverters died within six month after the purchase because of the dust and heat, but this one is already 1 year old and is still going strong.
Thx, I picked this model for my RV four month ago and it doesn’t disappoint so far. I drive around a lot, but since I installed solar, I don't really need camper parks anymore. There isn’t a lot in my van — a laptop, lights plus some stuff for cooking. this is why I chose an inverter with a little capacity — it’s enough for me.
A strong reliable inverter. In our cause it handles even a little more than expected, since our system is 4.2 kW in size or around that. I watch my system like a hawk and check everything: gotta hand it to him, it has very good efficiency. Overall, a solid product, would definitely recommend it.
Very easy customer service experience. Thank you.
Bought this one in case I want to add some batteries to my installation later. So far, so good

How do I install it? Can I do it myself? Do you offer installation services?
A1 SolarStore
Good day. We don’t provide installation services. The inverter is usually installed by a certified electrician. If you want to connect it to your off-grid system, you can do it yourself provided that you possess necessary skills. You can find the guide on building an RV solar system in our Guides & Articles section. The installation process should also be described in detail in the inverter manual.

Seven operating modes, including GridZero

The VFXR2812A supports seven programmable operating modes covering grid-tied self-consumption, backup, generator assist, and off-grid operation. The OutBack GridZero mode is particularly useful for installations in markets where net metering incentives have diminished or utility sell-back is restricted—it prioritizes stored solar energy to meet loads without exporting to the grid, reducing grid dependence without triggering sell-back limitations. Generator assist mode allows a smaller generator to supplement inverter output for loads that exceed generator capacity alone, reducing generator wear and fuel consumption.

Built for harsh environments

The vented VFXR chassis is engineered for installations where sealed enclosures would thermally derate or fail prematurely. Rated for operation from −40°F to 140°F (−40°C to 60°C) and 93% relative humidity, it is suited to marine, coastal, and industrial environments with persistent salt air, condensation, or elevated ambient temperatures. The NEMA Type 1 die-cast aluminum construction provides the structural integrity and thermal management that mission-critical installations demand.

Application scenarios

  • Off-grid residential or cabin: Standalone battery-backed system with generator assist for extended autonomy on a 12V bank.
  • Grid-tied backup: Seamless automatic transfer switch (built-in ATS per UL1741) keeps loads powered during outages without external transfer hardware.
  • Marine and coastal installations: Vented enclosure and wide humidity/temperature ratings handle the salt air and thermal stress of marine environments.
  • Scalable commercial systems: Up to nine VFXR units can be stacked for three-phase operation, or ten in parallel for single-phase or split-phase configurations—scaling from a single 2.8kW unit to larger multi-inverter arrays as load requirements grow.

Modular, stackable architecture

The FXR A-Series uses a modular design that allows capacity expansion without replacing existing hardware. Up to nine units stack for three-phase operation; up to ten run in parallel for single-phase or split-phase configurations, reaching up to 36kW in a grid-tied 24V or 48V system. Each unit connects with other OutBack Power electronics—charge controllers, the MATE3s system controller, and HUB communications—through a unified architecture. Paired with a MATE3s, the VFXR2812A gains access to OPTICS RE for remote monitoring and system control from any location.

System compatibility

The VFXR2812A operates on a 12VDC battery bank with a 10.5–17VDC input range and supports flooded, gel, AGM, lithium-ion, and flow battery chemistries with advanced multi-stage charging profiles. A remote temperature sensor is included for charge compensation. AC input voltage and frequency limits are adjustable via the MATE3s system controller. The unit integrates natively with OutBack's HUB communications bus, MATE3s display and controller, FlexPower enclosures, and compatible MPPT charge controllers for a fully coordinated system.

Why choose the OutBack Power VFXR2812A?

The OutBack Power VFXR2812A is the right choice for 12V system builders who need a hybrid solar inverter charger that can operate across extreme environmental conditions, scale modularly as their system grows, and handle grid-interactive modes—including GridZero—without a separate transfer switch or external control system. Backed by UL1741 and CSA certification, a 125ADC battery charger, and OutBack's deep integration ecosystem, the VFXR2812A delivers the reliability that mission-critical and off-grid installations require.
