If you have solar panels — or are planning to get them — finding the right solar battery backup solution matters. Whether you need reliable solar batteries for home use or want energy independence during outages, Enphase IQ Batteries are among the most widely installed residential storage systems in the US. But with several models available, picking the right one takes some research.
An Enphase IQ Battery is a solar energy storage system that works alongside a solar array. It stores excess solar energy during the day and releases it at night, during peak-rate hours, or when the grid goes down.
What separates Enphase from most competitors is what's inside: embedded microinverters. Every unit contains multiple microinverters that handle AC/DC conversion internally, with no separate inverter hardware needed.
Most home batteries store energy as DC and need a separate inverter to convert it for household use. Enphase skips that step — each unit has microinverters built right in.
If one microinverter stops working, the others keep the battery running while you wait for a repair. There's no single point of failure the way there is with a standalone inverter.
Enphase batteries are AC-coupled, meaning they connect to your home's existing AC wiring rather than directly to the solar panels. That makes them ideal for anyone adding solar panels with battery storage to an existing system, or retrofitting a solar panel battery storage setup without rewiring.
All Enphase IQ Batteries use lithium iron phosphate cells. When it comes to batteries for solar panels, LFP is the chemistry you want for long-term home battery storage — it runs cooler than older lithium-ion formulations, doesn't carry the same fire risk, and holds up better over thousands of charge cycles. It's cobalt-free as well, which matters to some buyers from a supply chain standpoint.
Like other quality deep cycle batteries, Enphase IQ Batteries are designed for regular, daily charge/discharge use without degrading prematurely.
| Model | Usable Capacity | Continuous Power | Peak Power | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IQ Battery 3T | 3.36 kWh | 1.28 kW | 1.92 kW | Entry-level, small homes |
| IQ Battery 10T | 10.08 kWh | 3.84 kW | 5.7 kW | Budget-conscious, existing systems |
| IQ Battery 5P | 5.0 kWh | 3.84 kW | 7.68 kW | High-power needs, scalable builds |
| IQ Battery 10C | 10.0 kWh | 7.08 kW | 14.16 kW | Whole-home backup, new installs |
All models carry a 15-year limited warranty with coverage up to 6,000 charge/discharge cycles.
The entry point in the lineup. At 3.36 kWh and 1.28 kW of continuous output, it covers basic loads — lights, a refrigerator, device charging. It works for small homes or as a starting unit you plan to build on later.
Three IQ Battery 3T units in a single enclosure, giving 10.08 kWh total. It packs the most storage per unit in the 2nd-generation lineup, making it a practical choice if you have an existing Enphase system and want meaningful capacity in a single enclosure.
💡 Note: The 3T and 10T are 2nd-generation units. They are not compatible with the 5P or 10C.
The 3rd-generation model stores 5.0 kWh with six embedded microinverters and a peak output of 7.68 kW. That peak figure matters — it's what allows the battery to start motor-driven loads like an air conditioner or well pump during an outage. Multiple 5P units can be stacked together.
Enphase's newest unit. The 10C carries 10 kWh of usable capacity, delivers 7.08 kW of continuous power, and peaks at 14.16 kVA. It has both 240V and 120V microinverters built in, so it can run a full home without extra neutral-forming hardware. Up to eight units can be stacked for 80 kWh total.
| Your situation | Recommended model |
|---|---|
| You want basic backup (lights, fridge, devices) | IQ Battery 5P |
| You want to run HVAC and major appliances during outages | IQ Battery 10C |
| You have an existing 2nd-gen Enphase system | IQ Battery 10T |
| You want maximum capacity for a large home | IQ Battery 10C |
| You're starting small but want to scale | IQ Battery 5P |
This is how much energy the battery can actually deliver — not the total stored amount, which is always a bit higher. For covering essentials during an outage, 5–10 kWh is a reasonable starting point. For whole-home backup, plan for 15 kWh or more.
This determines how many appliances the battery can run at once. A 3.84 kW output handles a refrigerator, lights, a TV, and some outlets at the same time. A 7.08 kW output handles all of that plus larger loads.
Motors in air conditioners, pumps, and refrigerators pull a large burst of current the moment they start up. Peak output is the short-term surge the battery can provide. If HVAC backup is a priority, this number matters more than continuous output.
For every 10 kWh of solar energy you store, you get roughly 9 kWh back out. The remaining 10% is lost as heat during conversion. Enphase's ~90% rating is standard for residential solar battery storage.
One cycle is one full charge and discharge. At one cycle per day, 6,000 cycles works out to roughly 16 years of daily use. Enphase's LFP chemistry holds up well over those cycles — and the 15-year warranty backs it up.
Enphase batteries are modular, but not interchangeable across generations. The 3T/10T (2nd gen) won't combine with the 5P (3rd gen) or 10C (4th gen). When sizing a system, all units need to come from the same generation.
| Feature | Enphase IQ Battery 10C | Tesla Powerwall 3 | LG RESU Prime 16H |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chemistry | LFP | LFP | NMC |
| Usable capacity (per unit) | 10.0 kWh | 13.5 kWh | 15.2 kWh |
| Continuous power | 7.08 kW | 11.5 kW | 7.0 kW |
| Embedded inverter | Yes | Yes | No |
| Round-trip efficiency | ~90% | ~89% | ~94.5% |
| Max scalability | 80 kWh (8 units) | 54 kWh (4 units) | 30 kWh (2 units) |
| Warranty | 15 years | 10 years | 10 years |
| Coupling | AC-coupled | DC-coupled | DC-coupled |
| Best for | Existing solar systems, modularity | New builds, high power output | High capacity per unit |
Enphase is a particularly good fit for anyone who wants a modular home battery system and a reliable backup battery for outages — without being locked into a single large unit. It has the longest warranty in this comparison and the most room to expand.

Yes, in most cases. Enphase batteries are AC-coupled, so they connect to your home's existing wiring without requiring a specific brand of solar equipment. Your installer can confirm compatibility with your setup.
Battery capacity equal to about half your daily electricity use is a reasonable place to start. If your home uses 30 kWh per day, 10–15 kWh of storage covers the essentials. For whole-home backup, you'll likely need two or more units.
The IQ Battery 10C handles 240V loads like HVAC, large appliances, and EV chargers. A single 5P or 10T covers essential loads only.
The 15-year warranty covers up to 6,000 cycles with a minimum 60% capacity retention. LFP batteries generally continue working past their warranty period.
LFP chemistry doesn't carry the thermal runaway risk of older lithium-ion batteries. Enphase batteries won't catch fire or overheat under normal conditions — one reason they're approved for indoor and enclosed-space installation.
Yes. All Enphase IQ Batteries are weatherproof and rated for outdoor installation, as well as garages and basements.
You can charge a battery from the grid without solar, but the usefulness is limited — you'd be shifting when you use grid power, not reducing how much of it you buy. As a solar backup battery or Enphase battery backup system, it works best when paired with solar.
