What makes a solar panel
the "best"?
There is no such thing as the best solar panels. However, some models are better than the other in certain ways. Let’s take a look at these ways.
Solar panel efficiency measures how much sunlight a panel can convert into electricity. Higher-efficiency panels produce more energy from the same amount of sunlight. This is especially useful if you have limited roof space. While high-efficiency panels are often more expensive, they can save money in the long run by generating more power over time. Choosing efficient panels helps maximize energy production and makes your solar system more effective.
24.8% — Neostar Aiko Solar 490W efficiency rating
Which solar panels have the highest efficiency? Top ratings belong to brands such as Maxeon, Aiko Solar and Canadian Solar — they use the most advanced technologies up to date. Top Chinese brands such as Trina Solar and Jinko Solar often offer high-efficiency panels at a low price.
Degradation rates show how much a solar panel's performance decreases over time. The first year in operation is the roughest: a panel loses 1-2% of its power output. After that, most panels lose a small percentage of their efficiency each year, usually around 0.5%. This means that after 25 years, a panel might still produce about 80% of the energy it did when it was new. A lower degradation rate means the panel will last longer and provide more energy over its lifetime.
Solar panels with N-type cells lose less power in first year of service
Panels from brands such as Maxeon, Panasonic, and REC show the lowest degradation rates in the industry. They lose no more than 0.25% of their output annually. Their panels retain over 90% of their power by the time a 25-year warranty runs out.
Solar panel product warranties protect you from defects in materials or workmanship. If a panel stops working properly due to a manufacturing issue, the warranty ensures the manufacturer will repair or replace it. These warranties usually last 10 to 25 years, depending on the brand, giving you peace of mind that your panels will work as expected for a long time.
Chinese and Indian solar panels from lower-tier brands have the shortest standard product warranties — 10 or 12 years. The majority of top-end brands offer 25 years of coverage. There are a few that are willing to offer a little extra: Aptos Solar gives 30 years with some of their models. The best terms were offered by Sunpower and now Maxeon: 40 years of product warranty.
Solar panels work in all climates, but their performance can vary with the weather. They are most efficient in areas with plenty of sunlight, like deserts, but they still work well in cooler, cloudy places because they use light, not heat, to produce energy. In hot climates, panels may be less efficient because high temperatures impact their output. Snow can reflect sunlight and help panels produce more energy, but heavy snow or dirt can block light and need to be cleared.
Hot climates speed up degradation of solar panels!
Canadian Solar and Q CELLS panels show great performance even in cloudy conditions and gloomy areas. Panels from REC and Panasonic have lower temperature coefficients which means they resist heat better and work well in hot places. Some Panasonic panels also tend to fight shading better because of a higher number of bypass diodes.
When choosing solar panels, aesthetics can be important, especially if you care about how your home or building looks. Panels come in different designs, like sleek black ones that blend into roofs. Some panels have a low profile, so they sit closer to the roof and look more modern. You can also choose panels with matching frames or colored back sheets to suit your style. Picking panels that look good can add value to your property and make your solar system more visually appealing.
When it comes to stylish panels, Solaria is the brand with probably the best-looking solar panels all around. Different panel design makes the surface of their modules look much more uniform and smooth.

How do you choose the right solar panels?
So how do you pick solar panels? Here are some good starting points.
1. Evaluate your needs
How high is your electric bill? Do you have enough free space on your roof? Do you need grid connection and protection against power outages? What kind of savings will a system actually provide? The answers to these questions are necessary in order to decide on the size of your system, panels, inverter and batteries that you are going to use and the configuration of the system.
2. Compare cost vs. quality
Solar panels don’t have to be the best of the best and cost a fortune to power your home. There are plenty of brands that offer quality products at affordable prices. Don’t forget to make use of federal and state-level solar incentives available to you to lower the cost of a system — most importantly 30% Solar Tax Credit.
3. Ask installers
Solar installers know best: they’ve seen thousands of roofs and installed thousands of systems. When in doubt, it’s best to consult one rather than go the full DIY route. A1 SolarStore has an in-house who can help when it comes to all the technical questions. If you would like, he can build a ready-to-install solar system tailored to your needs and offer you a quote.
