The Discover Energy Helios ESS 52-48-16000 (900-0077) is a 48V LiFePO4 battery engineered for residential and light-commercial energy storage, delivering 16,080 Wh of usable capacity in an outdoor-rated, wall-mount enclosure. Built on a 4th-generation BMS platform with closed-loop CAN communication, it supports grid-interactive, self-consumption, backup, and off-grid configurations — and is certified to UL 9540, UL 9540A, and UL 1973 for code-compliant installation across the US.
LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) is the most stable lithium chemistry available for stationary storage — it does not undergo thermal runaway under the conditions that affect NMC or NCA cells, and its flat discharge curve holds usable voltage consistent across the cycle. The Helios ESS pairs this chemistry with Discover's 4th-generation BMS, which manages cell-level balancing, charge termination, over-voltage, under-voltage, over-temperature, and short-circuit protection in real time. Dual fire arrestors and the integrated 200A DC breaker add a second layer of protection that most competing units leave to external components.
Most low-voltage LiFePO4 batteries restrict charging below 32°F (0°C), limiting their usefulness in cold-climate installations. The Helios ESS includes an integrated self-heating circuit that brings the cells up to safe charging temperature autonomously from as low as -13°F (-25°C), with no external heater or controller required. This makes it suitable for unheated garages, outdoor enclosures, and northern installations where competing batteries would either refuse to charge or require additional cold-weather accessories.
The Helios ESS is designed to reduce commissioning time on-site. Quick-connect plug-and-pull terminals eliminate custom cable terminations at the battery. Pre-wired parallel and inverter kits are available to simplify multi-unit builds. The wall-mount bracket is included, with adjustable depth from 1.1 to 2.3 in. (28–58 mm) to accommodate different wall surfaces. The galvanized steel enclosure is rated IP65 for outdoor installation in covered locations, removing the constraint of finding conditioned interior space.
The Helios ESS communicates via closed-loop CAN with compatible hybrid and battery inverters — verify CAN protocol support with your inverter manufacturer before purchase, as RS485 is not listed as a secondary communication option on this model. The 48V low-voltage architecture is compatible with the broad ecosystem of 48V hybrid inverters used in residential ESS applications. Multiple units connect in parallel using the pre-wired parallel kits; up to 36 modules can share a single inverter connection. Charge parameters: bulk/absorption voltage 55.2–56.8 VDC, float 53.6 VDC, recommended high voltage disconnect 56.9 V, recommended low voltage disconnect 48 V.
At 16 kWh usable in a single outdoor-rated enclosure, the Helios ESS offers more usable capacity per unit than most competing 48V wall-mount batteries — reducing the number of modules needed for a given system size. The integrated self-heating, NEC 690.12 RSD compliance, dual fire arrestors, and UL 9540 certification address the safety and permitting requirements that often slow residential installs, without requiring separate components.
