How to Choose a 400 Watt Solar Panel
A 400 watt solar panel is the standard residential class in the US, and it fits homeowners, RV and off-grid owners, and small installers. Higher efficiency and larger formats lifted panel wattage, and most home installs now use this class. Efficiency across the class runs 20.5% to 23%.
Homeowners weigh roof space against yearly use. A 400 watt solar panel for RV or cabin power usually means several panels, not a full array. Installers buy by the pallet.
What Counts as a 400 Watt Panel
A 400W solar panel is any panel rated from 395W to 425W. Manufacturers raised the power of the same physical panel from 400W to 415W. A higher-rated model is the same panel in the same format and takes no extra roof space. When you compare listings, read the rating, not the name.
An exact 400W rating is uncommon, since models are rated slightly above or below. A listing on either side still counts, so do not rule it out for missing the round number. Shop the whole class first, then narrow by brand, cell type, and warranty.
N-Type or PERC, Bifacial or All-Black
For a 400W panel, choose N-type TOPCon for slower degradation, PERC for a lower price, bifacial for light-colored roofs, gravel, or ground mounts, and all-black for appearance.
