- Overview
- Articles
Bifacial solar panels generate electricity from both sides, making them ideal for commercial roofs, carports, ground mounts, and farms where maximizing energy output per square foot matters. For U.S. property owners and installers, they offer a practical way to increase energy yield on reflective or space-constrained sites without expanding the array footprint.
How Bifacial Solar Panels Work?
A bifacial solar panel exposes solar cells on both sides to capture direct sunlight on the front and reflected or diffused light on the back. This design delivers roughly 10–30% more energy than comparable monofacial systems. Modern bifacial modules predominantly utilize N-type TOPCon technology, which offers a significantly higher bifaciality factor (the ratio of rear-to-front power) compared to older P-type PERC cells.
Instead of an opaque backsheet, bifacial modules use glass-glass or glass-transparent construction, allowing light reflected from concrete, white roofs, snow, gravel, or light soil to reach the rear cells. This dual-side harvesting improves output throughout the day, especially under low-light and diffuse conditions common on overcast days or in higher latitudes.
Bifacial vs Monofacial Comparison
The main differences appear in energy yield, mounting requirements, and project economics. While monofacial modules suit many residential rooftops, bifacial units excel where mounting height, reflectivity, and layout optimize rear-side contribution.
| Parameter | Bifacial (N-type TOPCon) | Monofacial |
|---|---|---|
| Light capture | Front plus rear side; uses direct, diffuse, and reflected light | Front side only; reflected light has minimal effect |
| Energy gain | 10–30% extra; higher bifaciality vs PERC | Baseline output at nameplate rating |
| Best conditions | Reflective surfaces, elevated mounting, wide row spacing | Standard roofs and ground mounts |
| Layout needs | Higher tilt and clearance maximize rear irradiance | Designed for front-side irradiance and roof constraints |
| Lifetime yield | Higher kWh and lower degradation (0.4% annually) | Lower price per watt but less kWh per square foot |
Types of Bifacial Solar Panels: Glass-Glass vs. Glass-Backsheet
Glass-Glass
Solar cells sit between two sheets of tempered glass — 2.0 mm front, 2.0 mm rear. No polymer backsheet at all.
Pros
- Moisture barrier. Glass blocks moisture far better than polymer, keeping cells better protected long-term.
- Lower degradation. Runs at 0.3–0.45%/year — meaningfully lower than glass-backsheet's 0.5–0.7%/year.
- Longer warranty. Most manufacturers back these with 30-year warranties (vs. 25 years for glass-backsheet).
Cons
- Heavier. 55–66 lbs vs. 44–49 lbs for glass-backsheet on standard high-wattage modules.
- Higher upfront cost. Roughly 5–10% more per panel at the module level.
- Hail vulnerability. The 2.0 mm heat-strengthened front glass is less impact-resistant than glass-backsheet's 3.2 mm tempered front glass.
Glass-Backsheet
Standard tempered glass (3.2 mm) on the front, transparent polymer film on the rear. Still bifacial, just lighter and cheaper.
Pros
- Lighter build. About 17% lighter than glass-glass, which reduces racking, transport, and labor costs.
- Lower operating temperature. The polymer dissipates heat better than glass — ~2.2% more power output at STC.
- Lower upfront cost. 5–10% cheaper at the panel level, with additional savings on racking and handling.
Cons
- Shorter warranty. 25-year warranties are standard — five fewer years than glass-glass.
- Faster degradation. Polymer degrades more quickly in hot, humid, or coastal environments.
- More output lost over time. The higher degradation rate means measurably less capacity retained in years 20–30.
If budget isn't the constraint and aesthetics matter — glass-glass looks better, carries longer warranties, and holds up better in harsh environments. If you're watching the budget or the roof can't take extra weight, glass-backsheet gives you the same bifacial performance for less money and fewer structural headaches.

How to Choose Bifacial Solar Panels
Not all bifacial modules in the A1 SolarStore catalog are built for the same job. The right choice depends on cell technology, brand, and your project needs.
Cell Technology: PERC or TOPCon?
The technology determines how much work the rear side actually does. The key number is the bifaciality factor — rear-side output as a percentage of front-side output.
| Technology | Bifaciality factor | Degradation/yr | Brands |
|---|---|---|---|
| TOPCon / N-type | ~80–85% | ~0.40% | JA Solar, Canadian Solar, CW Energy, Axitec, Seraphim, Hyundai Energy Solutions, GSTAR |
| PERC | ~70–75% | ~0.45–0.55% | Canadian Solar, GreenWatts, Hounen Solar, Phono Solar, ZNShine, Alps Solar |
TOPCon costs more per panel. For ground mounts and agrivoltaic installs where rear-side gain is the whole point, it usually pays back. For commercial rooftops where space is tight and the reflective surface is already good, PERC bifacial often delivers better ROI.
Top Bifacial Module Manufacturers
Canadian Solar — 545W–715W | PERC & TOPCon
The widest wattage range in the catalog. The CS7N series (685–715W TOPCon) targets utility-scale ground mounts where fewer panels per megawatt cuts racking and labor costs. Panels are rated for 113 psf snow and 84 psf wind loads; resistant to salt mist, ammonia, and PID degradation. Performance warranty guarantees 84.8% output after 25 years. Manufactured in China, Canada, and Vietnam.
Regitec — 575W | TOPCon N-type
A European brand with specs that punch above its price point. It runs N-type TOPCon cells with a bifaciality factor above 85%. Efficiency comes in at 22.26%, above the commercial average. For buyers who want European quality standards at a competitive price, it's one of the more straightforward value cases.
JA Solar — 440W–600W | TOPCon N-type
The most versatile Tier-1 option. Available in all-black 440–450W for rooftops and carports, and in 595–600W assembled-in-USA versions for projects claiming the IRA domestic content bonus. TOPCon N-type across the range — bifaciality factor above 80% on all models.
Jinko Solar — 580W | TOPCon
One of the world's largest panel producers. In this catalog, represented by a single 580W TOPCon bifacial model. Competitive pricing at scale; strong global service network.
Trina Solar — 415W (PERC), 445W (i-TOPCon)
Two all-black bifacial models in clearance. The 445W i-TOPCon is the higher-performer of the two — i-TOPCon is Trina's proprietary N-type cell variant with improved bifaciality vs standard PERC.
Phono Solar — 440W (PERC), 550W (PERC), 590W (TOPCon)
Three wattage tiers cover most project sizes. The 550W PERC is the most volume-available option; the 590W TOPCon is one of the few container-tier TOPCon options in this catalog.
Which Brand for Which Project
| Project type | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Large ground mount / utility farm | Canadian Solar, Astronergy | Highest wattage = fewer panels, less racking and labor; container pricing |
| Agrivoltaic (solar over crops) | GreenWatts, Phono Solar, SolarSpace | Container-tier PERC bifacial; wide row spacing required for farm equipment maximizes rear-side irradiance |
| Commercial flat roof (TPO/EPDM) | JA Solar, Axitec, Hyundai Energy Solutions, Philadelphia Solar | Mid-wattage TOPCon at pallet scale; white membranes (albedo 0.6–0.8) make rear-side gains real |
| Carport or shade structure | JA Solar, Seraphim, Axitec, Hyundai, SEG Solar | All-black aesthetics for visible installs; right wattage for carport dimensions |
| Snow-prone / high-albedo site | CW Energy, JA Solar, GSTAR Solar | TOPCon bifaciality factor 80% captures maximum reflected light from snow (albedo >0.8) |
| IRA domestic content priority | Hounen, Canadian Solar, ZNShine, Heliene | US-assembled; qualifies for 10% domestic content bonus |
Are Bifacial Solar Panels Worth It?
Bifacial panels are worth it when the site gives the rear side something to work with — reflective surface, elevation, or both. When those conditions aren't there, a standard monofacial panel does the same job for less money.
One thing bifacial panels genuinely do better regardless of site: they look better. All-black frameless bifacial modules in carports, shade structures, or building-integrated arrays are a real aesthetic upgrade over standard panels. That's a legitimate reason to choose them for visible installs — just not a reason to expect better energy output if the site doesn't support it.
