Power outages happen more often than most of us would like. A home battery backup keeps the fridge cold, the router online, and the heat running when the grid drops. If you've started shopping and everything sounds the same, you're not imagining it. Most product pages swap the same vocabulary around without explaining what actually matters.
Here's a guide to what a backup battery for home use really is, how the types differ, and the specs worth checking before you buy.
What Is a Home Backup Battery?
A home backup battery is a stationary energy storage unit that powers your house when the grid fails, or when you want to draw from stored solar energy. Most modern units package the cells, a battery management system, and often an inverter inside one cabinet.
Think of it as a big, smart deep cycle battery made for permanent indoor use. It's different from a portable power station (which you move around) and from a gas generator (which burns fuel and needs ventilation). A solar battery backup does the same job quietly, with no fuel to store.
How Home Backup Batteries Differ From Other Deep Cycle Batteries
Every home backup battery is a deep cycle battery, but not every deep cycle battery suits a home. RV, marine, and golf cart batteries are built to be mobile and modest in size. A home backup battery system is built to sit on a wall for ten-plus years and talk to your solar inverter and utility meter.
| Aspect | Home backup battery | RV / marine / golf cart |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Whole-home or essential loads | Mobile / recreational |
| Voltage | 48V or high-voltage stack | 6V, 12V, or 24V |
| Install | Permitted, wall-mounted | Portable |
| Certifications | UL 9540, UL 1973 for indoor use | Basic UL/IEC |
| Lifespan expectation | 10-15 years | 3-7 years |
Types of Home Backup Batteries
Four chemistries matter for home use. The table sums up the differences.
| Chemistry | Cycle life | Usable DoD | Efficiency | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LiFePO4 (LFP) | 4,000-7,000 | 90-100% | 95-98% | 10-15 yrs |
| NMC lithium-ion | 1,000-2,500 | 90-100% | 90-95% | 7-10 yrs |
| AGM lead-acid | 500-1,500 | ~50% | 80-85% | 3-7 yrs |
| Flooded lead-acid | 1,000-2,000 | 50% | 75-85% | 5-10 yrs |
LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate)
Lithium iron phosphate is the default for new installs. It handles heat well, uses almost all of its rated capacity, and lasts thousands of cycles. Costs more upfront than lead-acid but wins on cost per kWh over its lifetime.
NMC Lithium-Ion
Higher energy density than LFP, which means a smaller wall footprint. Older Powerwall-style units use NMC. Cycle life is shorter than LFP, and LFP has become the safer default for new homes.
AGM Lead-Acid
Sealed, maintenance-free, and cheap. The catch: you can only safely use about half the rated kWh, and it won't last through as many cycles. Fine as a budget option for occasional backup, not for daily cycling.
Flooded Lead-Acid
Rare in modern indoor installs. Needs a vented enclosure and routine watering. Still seen in some off-grid setups where cost per kWh matters more than convenience.
AC-Coupled vs. DC-Coupled Systems
A DC-coupled home battery connects to your solar panels through a hybrid inverter with a single conversion step. Efficiency lands around 97-98%. It's the cleaner choice for a new solar-plus-storage build.
AC-coupled means the battery has its own inverter and ties into your home's AC wiring. Round-trip efficiency drops to about 90-94%, but you can add it to an existing solar system without replacing the original inverter.
Specs That Actually Matter
Usable Capacity (kWh). How much energy you can actually pull out. A 10 kWh LFP gives close to 10 kWh usable. A 10 kWh AGM gives about 5 kWh.
Continuous Power Output (kW). How many appliances run at once. Typical range: 3-14 kW. If you want to run a central AC, check this first.
Peak / Surge Power. A short burst for motor startup. Fridges, well pumps, and AC compressors draw 1.5-2x their running watts for a second or two.
Depth of Discharge (DoD). The share of capacity the maker says you can safely use. LFP allows 90-100%. Lead-acid lives longest around 50%.
Round-Trip Efficiency. The kWh you get back for every kWh you put in. Good lithium batteries hit 95% or better. Lead-acid sits around 80-85%.
Cycle Life & Warranty. Lithium home batteries usually carry 10-year warranties covering 4,000-10,000 cycles, with 70% capacity guaranteed at end of term.
Scalability. Can you add modules later? Useful if your needs grow (EV charging, heat pump, bigger family).
Operating Temperature. LFP charges well from about 0 to 55°C. Garage installs in cold climates may need a heated enclosure.
Certifications (UL 9540, UL 1973). Look for UL 9540 and UL 1973 for indoor residential use. These cover battery safety and system-level fire and electrical testing.
How to Size a Home Backup Battery
Start with what you actually need to keep running. Your whole home battery backup doesn't need to power every outlet.
| Scenario | Size |
|---|---|
| Essentials only (fridge, lights, internet, modem) | 5-15 kWh |
| Partial home (essentials limited HVAC) | 15-30 kWh |
| Whole home, one day | 25-40 kWh |
| Whole home, multi-day outage | 60-100 kWh |
💡 Rough formula: list the watts of each appliance, multiply by hours of use per day, add it up, and divide by 1,000 for kWh. Add 20% headroom for efficiency losses and future capacity fade.
Solar Battery Backup vs. Battery Backup Without Solar
Home battery backup with solar lets you recharge during the day and cycle daily, shifting usage off peak grid hours. This is the most common setup in 2026.
Home battery backup without solar charges from the grid. It works as an insurance policy for outages and for time-of-use arbitrage. Sizing is usually smaller since you aren't offsetting daytime production. A transfer switch or smart panel handles the automatic cutover.
Short Battery Buyer Checklist
- Transfer type: does the unit provide seamless transfer, or do you need a manual switch?
- Islanding capability: can the battery run without the grid? Some grid-tied units cannot.
- Inverter surge rating: does it cover your AC or well pump at startup?
- Cold-weather behavior: what happens if you install it in an unheated garage?
- App features: does it support remote monitoring and storm-watch pre-charge?
FAQ
For essentials, plan on 5-15 kWh. For a full day of whole home coverage, most households land between 25 and 40 kWh. For multi-day outages, expect 60 kWh and up.
A 10 kWh battery running 1 kW of loads lasts about 10 hours before efficiency losses. Size capacity to how long your outages typically run, then add a margin.
Yes. It will charge from the grid, usually at off-peak rates. You lose the solar recharge during extended outages, so size accordingly.
LiFePO4 is the default for most new installs. It lasts longest, uses close to its full rated capacity, and has the best safety profile of the common chemistries.
Only if the unit supports islanding. Some grid-tied batteries are forced to shut down when utility power fails for safety reasons. Check the spec sheet for backup or island mode before you buy.
LiFePO4 home batteries typically last 10-15 years. NMC lithium runs 7-10 years. AGM lead-acid is 3-7 years. Warranties usually guarantee 70% capacity retention after 10 years.
