Shopping for a 12v battery is genuinely confusing. Not all 12 volt batteries are built for the same job — there are several chemistries, dozens of size options, and specs that don't mean much until someone explains them.
This guide covers what a 12 volt battery actually is, how the main types compare, which specs matter, and how to figure out which one fits your situation — solar system, RV, boat, or off-grid backup.
What is a 12V battery?
A 12v battery stores electrical energy at a nominal voltage of 12 volts. It's the most widely used voltage for small-to-medium off-grid, mobile, and backup power systems.
Most buyers don't realize there are two fundamentally different battery types under the "12V" label. Starter batteries — like a regular car battery — deliver a quick burst of power to crank an engine, then recharge right away. Deep cycle batteries are different: they discharge slowly over hours and are built to do that repeatedly. That's what you need for solar, RV, marine, or off-grid use.
So when you're shopping for a 12v deep cycle battery, you're not just looking at voltage. You're looking at a battery designed for sustained, repeated use.
Types of 12V batteries
FLA (Flooded Lead-Acid)
The oldest and cheapest type. Requires periodic maintenance — you top off the water levels and keep the area ventilated. Heavy, must stay upright. Any 12v lead-acid battery in this category needs ventilation and regular checks — it's not ideal for enclosed or mobile spaces.
Works for fixed, stationary installations where the initial price is the deciding factor.
AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat)
A sealed lead-acid design. No maintenance, no spills, handles vibration better than flooded. As an agm deep cycle battery, it handles repeated charge cycles better than flooded lead-acid in mobile conditions. Gel
Similar to AGM but uses a thickened electrolyte. Handles very deep discharges well, but overcharging damages it. Increasingly niche — you'll find fewer options and they're harder to source.
LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate)
The 12v lithium battery is where the category has moved for serious users. A 12v LiFePO4 battery typically weighs 24–30 lbs and lasts 2,000–5,000 cycles — far beyond what any lead-acid type offers. Most buyers looking at a 12 volt lithium battery are choosing LiFePO4 specifically for its stability and long cycle life. The upfront cost is real, but the long-term math usually works out in lithium's favor.

Where are 12V batteries used?
The 12V standard covers a wide range of setups:
- Solar systems: small off-grid cabins, solar kits, portable rigs.
- RVs and camper vans: house batteries running lights, appliances, and electronics.

Key specs to look at when buying
Capacity (Ah)
Amp-hours tell you how much energy the battery stores. A 100Ah battery can deliver 10 amps for 10 hours. For most RV and solar setups, a 12v 100ah battery is a solid starting point. Common sizes run 50Ah to 200Ah.
Depth of discharge (DoD)
This is the spec most buyers overlook. DoD is how much capacity you can actually use before the battery needs recharging.
Lead-acid batteries top out at 50% recommended DoD — a 100Ah AGM gives you about 50Ah of usable power before it needs a charge. LiFePO4 handles 80–100% DoD, meaning a 100Ah lithium delivers roughly 80–95Ah in real-world use. A 100Ah lithium effectively replaces a 200Ah lead-acid bank.
Cycle life
- AGM: 400–1,000 cycles, or about 2–4 years with daily use.
- LiFePO4: 2,000–5,000 cycles, or 8–10 years.
Weight
A 100Ah lead-acid battery weighs 60–70 lbs. The same capacity in LiFePO4 weighs 24–30 lbs. For mobile setups, that's not a small difference.
Cold cranking amps (CCA)
Only relevant if you're starting an engine. CCA measures the power delivered at 0°F (-18°C) for 30 seconds. In cold climates, 650–800 CCA is where you want to land.
Operating temperature
LiFePO4 operates from -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C), but it cannot charge below freezing without a built-in heater. Lead-acid handles cold discharge a bit better, though it loses capacity in low temperatures too.
12V vs. 24V vs. 48V: which system fits your situation?

💡 12V is the right call for most first-time buyers. If your load is modest and your equipment already runs on 12-volt batteries, there's no reason to add complexity.
If you're using the battery a few times a year, AGM is a reasonable choice. Lower upfront cost, easy to find, and straightforward to replace.
If you're using it daily — running solar, living in an RV, or out on the water regularly — a LiFePO4 battery is worth the higher price. The doubled usable capacity and 8–10 year lifespan mean the cost per usable kilowatt-hour often comes out lower than AGM over time.
Know your use case before you pick a battery
There's no single best 12v battery. There's the right one for how you actually use it.
For occasional use — weekend camping, a backup battery that sits most of the year — a quality AGM does the job without the higher price tag. For daily use, mobile setups, or anything where weight and long-term reliability matter, lithium iron phosphate is the better investment. The performance gap is real, and so is the payoff over 8–10 years.
Start with your Ah needs. Choose your chemistry based on how often you'll use it and how long you plan to keep it. Then look at the specs — DoD, cycle life, and weight — rather than just the price.

AGM batteries typically hold up for 2–4 years with regular use. LiFePO4 batteries can go 8–10 years or more. How deeply you discharge them and how consistently you charge them affects lifespan as much as chemistry does.
Total your devices' daily watt-hour consumption, then divide by 12. That's your Ah number. If you're using lead-acid, double it — you can only safely use half the rated capacity. With lithium, the number you get is roughly what you need.
It'll work briefly and then fail. Starter batteries aren't built for slow, sustained discharge. Using one as a house battery will damage it within months.
