A lead acid battery is a rechargeable battery that generates electricity through a chemical reaction between lead plates and a sulfuric acid solution (the electrolyte). When the battery discharges, lead and sulfuric acid react to produce lead sulfate and electrical energy. Charging reverses that reaction. A lead acid battery diagram typically shows two sets of plates — positive lead dioxide and negative sponge lead — submerged in sulfuric acid electrolyte inside a polypropylene case. This lead-acid battery design, unchanged in its fundamentals for over 160 years, is what makes the technology so predictable and easy to work with.
💡 This technology has been around since 1859 and remains one of the most produced rechargeable batteries in the world. It's affordable, reliable, widely available, and nearly 100% recyclable. In automotive applications alone, lead acid remains the dominant battery chemistry worldwide.
Common applications include off-grid and solar energy storage, RVs, boats, marine systems, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), forklifts, automotive starting batteries, and backup power systems.
All lead acid batteries share the same basic chemistry. What differs is how the electrolyte is managed inside, and that makes a real difference in performance, maintenance, and where each type fits.
There are three main types: flooded lead acid, AGM, and gel. AGM and gel are both subcategories of the valve regulated lead acid battery (VRLA), also called sealed lead acid battery (SLA).
Also called a wet cell battery, the flooded lead acid battery has free liquid electrolyte inside. It's the original lead acid design and still the most common.
It's the cheapest type upfront, but it comes with ongoing work. You need to top up the cells with distilled water every 2-4 weeks, keep it upright to prevent spills, and store it somewhere ventilated since it releases hydrogen gas during charging. When maintained properly, it has good cycle life.
Good fit for: stationary solar systems, off-grid setups, forklifts, and any application where low cost matters more than convenience.
In an AGM battery, the electrolyte is absorbed into a thin fiberglass mat pressed between the lead plates. This makes it completely sealed and spill-proof.
It requires no maintenance. You can mount it in any orientation, it handles higher charge and discharge rates than gel, performs well in cold weather, and resists vibration better than a flooded battery. It costs more than flooded but less than gel.
Good fit for: RVs, marine applications, solar energy storage, UPS systems, and any mobile or hard-to-access installation.
A gel battery works like a flooded battery, but the electrolyte is mixed with fumed silica to form a thick gel. This seals it completely and makes it capable of very deep, slow discharges.
It's maintenance-free and spill-proof. It's also the most expensive of the three and the most sensitive to overcharging. Use a gel-compatible charger. It's not well suited for high-rate charging or discharging.
Good fit for: remote monitoring systems, telecom backup, medical equipment, anything with low and gradual power draw.

The lead acid battery vs lithium ion question comes up constantly, and the answer depends on your priorities.
A 12v lead acid battery costs significantly less upfront than an equivalent lithium unit. The catch is that lead acid only lets you use about 50% of its rated capacity before you need to recharge. Discharging deeper shortens the battery's life. A lithium battery can be safely discharged to 80-100% of its capacity.
