Solar systems with string inverters
Solar systems with string inverters are the most popular choice among our customers. They are the most affordable, and perform very well in a typical residential installation. In a nutshell, string inverter systems consist of 3 to 6 strings, with each containing up to 12 solar panels. Typically, each string has a dedicated controller inside the inverter. This allows to maximize performance by applying different settings to each of the strings. It could be particularly helpful if the strings are installed on different sides of the roof or at different angles.
The pros and cons of solar systems with string inverters
String inverter solar systems are contrasted with microinverter-based options. Those implement a fundamentally different approach, employing a separate small inverter for each of the panels in a system. Here are the main advantages of string inverter systems:
- Ease of maintenance. A single inverter in an accessible location is much easier to troubleshoot than dozens of inverters on the roof
- Price. Solar systems with string inverter cost significantly less
- Proven reliability. String inverter solar systems have been tested for decades
There are scenarios where solar systems with string inverters wouldn’t be the most optimal choice. Here are their main weaknesses:
- Central point of failure. If a string inverter fails, the whole system is ground to a halt
- Upgradability. Solar string inverter systems are not as easy to expand unless an oversized inverter is chosen beforehand
- Shading resistance. With a string inverter, a single shaded panel will affect the whole string
