Solar microinverter systems, on the other hand, have an individual inverter for each module in the array.
The pros and cons of a solar system with microinverters
A cheaper alternative to microinverters is a central string inverter. These are two fundamentally different approaches. And while solar systems with microinverters cost more, in the long run they can be more cost-efficient. Let’s look at the main strengths of such systems:
- No single point of failure. Each microinverter-panel pair is a mini system in and of itself
- Expandability. With microinverter solar panel systems, adding extra capacity is a breeze
- Module-level monitoring. String inverters allow tracking the performance of each panel individually, while string inverters only track the performance of the whole system
- Better warranties. A typical warranty for a string inverter is 8 to 12 years, while microinverters have 25-year warranties
- More power. In a string, the current is reduced to that of the panel with the poorest performance. In microinverter-based systems, all panels produce at their top capacity
- Shading protection. With microinverters, a single affected panel won’t reduce the output of the whole string
