Sealed AGM Batteries

Absorbed glass mat or AGM batteries are a type of lead acid batteries and a perfect option for those who are unable to perform regular check-ups. AGM batteries have the electrolyte enclosed in thin glass mats instead of freely flooding the plates. They normally offer higher discharge current, which allows them to be used as starter batteries as well.

Anatomy of AGM deep cycle battery

Deep cycle AGM battery consists of:

  • A number of positive and negative plates;
  • AGM separator, which separates the two plates;
  • Electrolyte in absorptive glass mat.

Those components are enclosed in a plastic cell. When the battery discharges, lead and lead dioxide react with sulfuric acid in the electrolyte to form lead sulfate. When the battery recharges, lead sulfate reverts back to lead, lead dioxide, and sulfuric acid.

How to size AGM battery for your PV system

When sizing your AGM deep cycle batteries, you need to calculate your daily energy needs. To do that, check the electrical meters, look at your recent electricity bills or count the power ratings of all your household appliances.

When choosing an AGM battery, take into account its depth of discharge (DOD) — solar batteries should not be discharged below a certain level on a regular basis. Normally, deep cycle AGM batteries have a DOD of 50%, which means that it is a rechargeable battery, but you can’t discharge more than a half of the battery on a regular basis. Remember, constant deep discharge leads to an early death of a battery.

Pros and cons of AGM batteries

Pros:

  • No maintenance is required
  • This deep-cycle battery gets charged up to five times faster than a flooded battery
  • Lifespan up to 8 years
  • Spill-proof and non-hazardous
  • Cheap to ship

Cons:

  • More expensive than FLA batteries, but still a low cost option
  • Let off gas if it is overcharged
