When you compare traditional gas generators for camper vans and solar power, PV modules come out ahead. This is why lots of boondockers start to install solar panels on top of their trailers and let the sun take care of their appliances. What are solar panels for RV?

Solar panels have a number of advantages over generators and hook-up stations in RV parks. PV modules are:

  • silent, make no smell
  • require almost no maintenance
  • need no fuel
  • pay for themselves over time

Most popular solar panels for RV have a 100W output. However, installing more powerful panels on top of your van, you can use your limited space more efficiently. On average you can fit 6-8 solar panels on top of an RV.

Don’t forget that an RV solar system is more than just panels: you also need a charge controller for the safety of house batteries, and possibly an inverter if some of your appliances require AC. You can install AC solar panels and forego the inverter to save space, but then your batteries also have to be able to charge off the alternating current.

What is the Best Solar Panel for RVs?

There are no “the best” solar panels for mobile homes per se, because different panels are good in their own ways. Some panels excel in cloudy conditions, others have a good shading tolerance. Think about the circumstances and weather conditions that you will encounter during your travels. For example, LG Neon 2 offers wind resistance of 5,400 Pa on the front side and 4,000 on the rear, which is almost double the standard for solar panels. Panasonic HIT 330W has a better shading resistance than most models due to the 4 bypass diodes in its design. Panasonic 330W AC Module With Enphase IQ7X already has a built-in microinverter which allows the panel to produce alternating current on the spot.
